Cartagena, Spain

Introduction to Cartagena

Cartagena’s Old Town is protected by the city walls. There’s a natural harbour that is watched over by the medieval Castillio de la Concepcion, from which there are superb views. Many of the buildings from Roman Cartagena have disappeared, but some important sites remain, including the amphitheatre dating from around 100BC.

As one of Spain’s most important port cities for over 2000 years, Cartagena is bursting with history and culture. Originally built over 5 small hills by the Romans, Cartagena is strategically placed on the Mediterranean coastline and boasts some wonderful architecture and historic monuments, as well as a beautiful bay and stunning natural harbour that’s overlooked by the medieval Castillo de la Conception.

Although many of the buildings from Roman Cartagena have disappeared, there are still many important sites to discover and explore, including the incredible Roman Theatre – built between 5 and 1 BC and the Concepción Castle that served as a fortress for the Carthaginians, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians as well as the Romans. Cartagena is also home to a number of Modernist buildings that were designed and built by the pupils of Antoni Gaudi, the world famous architect renowned for designing the stunning La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

We will depart from the pier to the area of La Manga which boasts one of the most moderate climates in Spain, with more days of sunshine than other mainland areas and water temperatures higher than average. As a result it has become known as the "Costa Calida" - the "Warm Coast". It is a strip of sand which forms a "barrier" and encloses the "Mar Menor" (Minor Sea) and separates it from the "Mar Mayor" (the Mediterranean Sea). There are over 44 kms of beaches, narrower but with protected bays and coves on the side of the Mar Menor, and longer, wider expanses of pure golden sand fronting the Mediterranean. With a total surface area of 170 square kilometres it is the largest salt water lake in Europe. On the way, we will show you the La Manga Club Principe Felipe complex, one of the best golf courses.

From the coach, you will have the chance to see a golf complex that has been voted Europe’s top golf resort three times in the past four years. You will have some time to explore on your own and form your own impressions of this extraordinary area of La Manga. Then we will drive back to Cartagena. Here we will enjoy a scenic tour of Cartagena. The city was one of the most important and prosperous cities in the Roman Hispania. Nowadays it is a tourist city with a privileged location at the tip of a small peninsula surrounded by 5 defensive hills, opening out onto the Mediterranean.

After this panoramic view, we will enjoy some free time in the main street of Cartagena. We will also have a refreshment stop to try the local drink “asiatic coffee” which consists of an espresso, condensed milk, 43 liquor, brandy & cinnamon. We will then make our way back to the pier.

Following your visit you will begin your tapas trail through the city, pausing at five different bars to try a typical tapa of the city of Cartagena.

Tapas first began in the neighboring province of Andalucía; the word “tapa” literally means “cover” or “lid”. It is thought that originally drinks were served with a slice of ham or cheese to place on top of the glass to keep the flies away. Another legend is that due to illness, the Spanish King Alfonso X had to eat a small amount of food with his drink. Once recovered from his illness, he ordered all bars in of the region to serve wine with a small amount of food. Tapas can now be found throughout Spain and each region has its own specialties. At the end of the tour, you will have a short stroll back to the pier.
