Canakkale, Turkey

Introduction to Canakkale, Turkey

The sprawling harbour town of Canakkale has numerous historic sites to visit.

Çanakkale is at the narrow entrance to the Çanakkale Strait, also known as the Dardanelles, linking the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean. The area has been the scene of terrible conflicts through the ages, from the Trojan Wars – Homeric Troy is thought to be close by at Truva – to the Gallipoli Landings in the First World War. The hauntingly beautiful Gelibolu Peninsula Historical National Park has war graves and memorials to the half-million men on both sides who died in that conflict.

In the town is an excellent archaeological museum with ceramics, furniture, burial artefacts, jewellery and sculpture from throughout the local area. There are fascinating displays of findings from recent excavations at the site of Troy, along with material from Hellenic tumulus dating back over 2,500 years.

Experience Anzac Cove in Turkey where the legendary Gallipoli Campaign was fought.

A short ferry ride will take you to Gallipoli and Anzac Cove, arriving at the Lone Pine Memorial. It is the main Australian memorial on Gallipoli and commemorates the 3,268 Australians and 456 New Zealanders who died and have no known grave, plus the 960 Australians and 252 New Zealanders who were buried at sea.

Next, you arrive at Chunuk Bair, which was a main target for the Anzac force but remained in Turkish hands. Visit the New Zealand National Memorial, which dominates the peak with its massive stone pylon, and the New Zealand Memorial which is a bronze sculpture of Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal. The statue commemorates his remarkable escape from injury when his pocket watch stopped a piece of shrapnel as he was leading a counter attack. Following your visit, you continue on to enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, before travelling back to the ferry. Enjoy a short photo stop at the Trojan Horse.

Discover the immortal city of Troy, home to the fabled Helen and the mighty Trojan Horse!

Troy is spoken of in both the Illiad and the Odyssey; the latter tells the tale of Helen – a striking woman, whose beauty was said to have launched the Trojan War. Troy existed for 4,000 years before suddenly disappearing from the earth; it was not until the late 1800’s that the ancient ruins of Hislarlik were discovered. Until then, many people believed that the city only existed in the tales. Enjoy approximately two hours at this UNESCO World Heritage Site exploring the remains of this intriguing old city.
