Bergen, Norway

Introduction to Bergen, Norway

The Hanseatic city of Bergen has many attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, with its colourful timbered houses and cobbled streets; a vibrant fish market; and the Troldhaugen Museum, the former home of Norway's most famous composer, Edvard Grieg.

Bergen was one of the great Hanseatic ports, and this maritime heritage is recalled by the 900-year-old Bryggen Wharf, with its splendid museum. The wharf is a delight to explore: its narrow streets climb away from the waterfront, lined by interesting shops, colourful half-timbered houses and cobbled stairways, with alleyways and tiny open spaces that beg to be explored. In summer months every spare corner seems to be filled with pots and containers overflowing with colourful flowers that fill the air with perfume.

Bergen is framed by seven magnificent hills, the highest of which can be reached by a funicular railway. From the top there are spectacular views down to the harbourside, where cafés, bars and restaurants welcome visitors from around the world. Bergen was the home of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Grieg, and the Troldhaugen is a museum devoted to his life and work, including an exhibition centre, shop and café.

The legendary composer Edvard Grieg lived and worked in Bergen’s Hop district during the summertime. His lakeside home, ‘Troldhaugen’ (meaning ‘Troll Hill’), is now a museum, and you will enjoy a short performance of Grieg’s work in the small concert hall in the grounds.

Grieg was fascinated by trolls – mythical monsters that, according to legend, lived in the mountains of Norway. As you explore the modest house, you will wonder at the significance of the notes that once filled these rooms. The walls whisper stories of melodies that sprang from the heart and hands of an incredibly talented man.

Gain an insight into Norwegian farmlife with a visit to Øvre Gard Farm, located in beautiful countryside close to Jordalsvannet Lake.

Øvre Gard Farm has a long history dating back to the early 9th century, when the farm was the head of a tiny kingdom. More recently, the farm’s cellar was used as a prison which housed one of the most famous Norwegian prisoners of all time - Gjest Baardsen - in the early 18th century.

Today the farm has traditional farming with sheep, hens and horses. It is visited by children from kindergartens and schools and is used for different events and celebrations. You will meet some of the traditional animals, common on many Norwegian farms. Learn more about the history of the farm and about the agriculture in the western part of Norway, and admire examples of the traditional national costume – the Hordaland bunad. Bergen was once the capital of Norway and is known as ‘gateway to the fjords’. Boasting nearly 1,000 years’ experience of welcoming visitors to the area, the inhabitants are justly proud of their beautiful city that has a great shipping, trading and cultural tradition. In 1070, King Olav Kyrre gave this Viking harbour the status of a town, and ever since then, Bergen has been open to the world. Today it is second in size only to the capital city of Oslo.

You will depart from the pier by coach and pass the medieval King Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower. Also pass the picturesque old wooden buildings at Bryggen - the Hanseatic quarter of Bergen. Your sightseeing tour will continue as you head past the Fish Market and drive towards the peninsula of Nordnes, known for its white houses from the 19th century and the Bergen Aquarium, which is home to one of Europe’s largest marine life collections (not visited). Continuing along the peninsula there are beautiful views of the harbour.

Your short tour will end with a ride on the funicular railway to the summit of Mount Fløyen. Rising some 1,000 feet above sea level, there are breathtaking views (weather permitting). Here you will have time at leisure – there are a number of walking routes, a small shop and a refreshment kiosk available for you to enjoy.

The contemporary dance production We Are Here Together has been choreographed by Mia Habib and Marcelo Evelin, two sensational people with large appetites for confrontation and challenge, who are willing to confront and challenge their own and other’s opinions and go into the bodies of others.

Habib and Evelin have a raw and naked choreographic language. The piece can seem unrefined, but their work is shrewdly carried out and they work actively, consciously and consistently to maintain direction in the language of movement, until the moment it is performed for the audience. Their relation to the body is that the body has memories and thoughts, a story – it has lived in a ritual. The body exists in a mass and it is wild!

The Barony in Rosendal is the smallest ‘palace’ in Scandinavia, and the only one of its kind in Norway. Combine this with the stunning scenery of the Hardangerfjord and you are sure to have a memorable day!

Your tour begins by coach, passing Bergenhus Fortress, King Håkon’s Hall, Rosenkrantz Tower and the bustling fish market. Leaving the city, proceed to Sørfjord where Oster Island – the largest island on the west coast – is in view. Your journey continues through the mountain plateau of Kvamskogen and via several tunnels, to the Tokagjel Gorde. A short stop will be made to admire the lovely Steinsdal Waterfall.

At Tørvikbygd, there will be a short crossing by ferry to Jondal over the Hardangerfjord, during which you will be able to enjoy wonderful views of snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Soon you will arrive at Rosendal, the main attraction of the tour. The manor, dating from 1665 is situated between fjords, glaciers, mountains and waterfalls, affording some wonderful views.

You will receive a guided tour of the house – feel as though you are transported back in time as you admire artefacts collected over several generations. Each of the rooms is influenced by the owners over the last 250 years and the Manor House is preserved as a home, the way it was when the last owners left in 1927. Enjoy a delicious two-course lunch, created using a variety of locally produced ingredients.

The manor is also renowned for its impressive grounds, built up over centuries and offering over 300 years of garden history. You will have free time to explore at leisure - walk through the Renaissance garden, relax in the romantic landscape garden or discover the kitchen garden – where a variety of produce is grown for use in the manor kitchens.

All too soon, your time here must come to an end, and you will catch the new short ferry to Gjerdmundshamn over the fjord, before the scenic drive back to Bergen and your awaiting ship after a truly memorable day!

Bergen was once the capital of Norway and is now considered to be the ‘gateway to the fjords’. Boasting nearly 1,000 years’ experience of welcoming visitors to the area, the inhabitants are justly proud of their beautiful city that has a great shipping, trading and cultural tradition. In 1070, King Olav Kyrre gave this Viking harbour the status of a town, and ever since then, Bergen has been open to the world! Today it is second in size only to the new capital city of Oslo.

You will depart from the pier by coach and en route pass the medieval King Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower. Enjoy a ride on the Flåm Railway which is just one of the many highlights of your tour.

Depart Bergen by coach, heading up across the coastal mountain range and inland to Voss. Continue, passing farms, orchards, lakes and rivers to the Tvinde Waterfall for a short photo stop. At the Stalheim Hotel, spectacularly perched upon a cliff 550 metres high, overlooking waterfalls and the valley below, you will have lunch. There should also be a little free time here to enjoy the view from the garden behind the hotel, or purchase souvenirs in the small shop. From here you drive down Stalheim’s Kleivene – one of Europe’s steepest roads with a gradient of 1 in 5. There are magnificent views at each of the 13 hairpin bends, which your able driver will negotiate (it is not always possible to take the road with hairpin bends however, so a different route may be taken).

Down in the valley the journey continues through the Gudvangen tunnel to Flåm, meaning ‘large expanse of land between high mountains’. Here you board the train for a spectacular ride on the Flåmsbanen railway line. Wind your way up through several tunnels, over bridges and past thundering waterfalls. Narrow paths twist up the mountainsides, used by only the deftest goats, and beautiful vistas of the valley begin to unfold below. The track you will follow is an engineering wonder, ascending to 867 metres within just 50 minutes. It has a gradient of 1 in 18 over a distance of 20 kilometres. The world famous railway was built between 1920 and 1940, and was in fact opened by German troops, who had a large military camp in Flåm.

At Myrdal – towards the top of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau you change trains and continue the rail journey through Voss and back to Bergen

IS THIS TOUR RIGHT FOR YOU? This tour involves only a little walking, however to get the most from this tour uneven, sloping ground, gravel and steps are encountered. There are steep and narrow steps to negotiate to board the train at both stations. It is not recommended for wheelchair users, due to the boarding of the train, and the changing from platform to platform. Please note that it can seem a very long and busy day, so do bear this in mind when choosing this tour. For reference, the trains used are not exclusive to Fred. Olsen. The seats or carriage on the train will be reserved, but the whole group may not sit together, rather in smaller groups. For the scenic Flåm journey, we would politely ask that guests refrain from standing to take photographs, as this blocks the view for other passengers. A commentary may be given for part of the journey, however please note that it is difficult to hear if the carriage windows are open – an onboard display will also be available. A warm jumper or jacket is advisable, as you will be travelling at height. Please note this tour includes a journey with hairpin bends and also travels through several tunnels which mean views are restricted. It may prove unsuitable for guests who suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia. There are no afternoon refreshments included, so you may wish to bring a bottle of water. The tour may operate in reverse, with the journey to Flåm by train, and return by coach.

Norway National Day - INFORMATION

The parades and celebrations of Norway National Day are truly a sight to behold and we are fortunate to be in Bergen on this very special day - for cruise W1604

The parades and celebrations of Norway National Day are truly a sight to behold and we are fortunate to be in Bergen on this very special day.

The Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17th 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent nation, and this date is now a national holiday. Every year on May 17th Norwegians fill the streets with banners and flags in celebration of Norway's constitution. Many countries celebrate their constitution with military parades, whilst the people of Norway choose to show their pride and hope for the future - the children. All over Norway, parades of children with an abundance of flags form the central element of the celebration.

There will be several processions in Bergen, which include children, students, the police and fire brigades as well as marching bands. Many of the people will be dressed in their national costumes in honour of the day.

It is hoped that most guests will enjoy watching the processions on 17th May. More details will be given out onboard. We would like to stress that the city will be extremely busy on this day and Museums will be closed. There will be limited tours operating on 17th May.

Embark on a guided walking tour around Bergen – the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’.

Your tour starts with a walk past the Rosenkrantz Tower – part of the Bergenhus Fortress and considered to be one of the most important renaissance monuments in Norway. Continue along the Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For over 400 years, the Wharf was one of the offices of the Hanseatic League, and today the wooden buildings here are believed to be Norway’s most photographed buildings.

Your walk continues around the harbour to downtown Bergen and the Magic Ice Bar – a winter wonderland constructed from several tons of ice. The ice bar is the work of world-renowned ice carvers, and is re-crafted several times every year. On arrival, you will be given a warm poncho and gloves, before stepping inside to admire the sculptures and artwork that adorn this enchanted atmosphere. Enjoy a welcome drink served in an ice glass as you view works inspired by artists such as Edvard Munch and Gustav Klimt, and savour the magical atmosphere enhanced by LED lighting and candlelight.

The final stop of the tour is the Fish Market, offering an abundance of fresh fish. You will have the opportunity to see several different species, and savour the sights, sounds and smells on offer – perhaps even sample a taste of traditional Norwegian fishcake.

As the tour concludes, you have the option of returning to the ship with your guide, or spending some time at leisure to further explore the city.

Get to know the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’ with this short walking tour, taking in some of the city’s best-known sights.

Begin your tour with a short walk to the Rosenkrantz Tower, part of the Bergenhus Fortress and considered one of the most important renaissance monuments in Norway. The tower was the residence of King Eirik Magnusson. The highlight of your visit is the climb up the narrow flights of stairs, right up to the roof, which provides impressive views of the harbour.

Continue and take a closer look at the Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered to be the most photographed buildings in Norway. For over 400 years the Wharf housed the offices of the Hanseatic League. Stroll through the wooden tenements, delve into bygone days and the history of the Wharf and the stories of those who lived and worked here.

You will continue walking to the square where a statue of Ole Bull is located. Ole Bornemann Bull was born in Bergen in 1810 at Svaneapoteket in Strandgaten. A world-renowned virtuoso violinist and composer, his impassioned dedication to his country’s folk music played a key role in the development of Norwegian culture following Norway’s separation from Denmark. As well as being a musician, Ole Bull was a networker, promoter, inspiration and Norway’s first superstar.

Next, you will visit the Fish Market, offering an abundance of fresh fish and seafood, as well as fruit, vegetable and handicraft stalls. You will have the opportunity to savour the sights, sounds and smells of this bustling market.

Your tour concludes at Mount Fløyen’s lower station, where you will receive the tickets for the famous funicular railway. You may spend the rest of your day at leisure, perhaps discovering the wonderful views at the summit of Mount Fløyen, or further exploring the city, before returning to your awaiting ship.
