Introduction to Bari

Bari also has an unusual claim to fame - as the last resting place of Santa Claus. Or, at least, of Saint Nicholas whose bones were stolen by Bari sailors from the city of Myra (now in Turkey) and re-buried in the magnificent cathedral.

With its rich, eclectic mix of cultures – Norman, Arabic and Roman – Bari is a unique, beautiful old city with beautiful architecture, a bustling centre and busy port. Located on the Adriatic coastline, Bari is one of Italy’s most important port cities and is also one of the country’s most popular coastal holiday destinations.

Bari City centre is divided into four different sections, each with their own style, history and architecture. To the north of the city you will find the Medieval Old Town, positioned between two beautiful modern harbours. The Old Town is home to some of Bari’s most famous and interesting monuments including the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Palazzo del Catapano and the Church of Saint Gregory. Journey south and you will soon discover the Murat Quarter – a more modern representation of Bari. Here you will find the major shopping areas of the city and a grand promenade along the seafront to enjoy.

The historic town of Polignano a Mare – located a short distance from the city centre - is one of the region's most fascinating settlements and it's astonishing location has to be seen to be believed. Perched on the edge of cliffs surrounding a gorgeous beach and bay, Polignano a Mare is a truly unique and memorable place to visit.
