Introduction to Banjul, The Gambia

With its colourful market, busy harbour, quaint museum and curious mix of architecture, Banjul is full of interest. Relax on the incredible tropical beaches and soak up the glorious sunshine, head into town and experience the hustle and bustle of the busy Albert Market or head to the top of Independence Drive for some incredible views.

With its colourful market, busy harbour, quaint museum and curious mix of architecture, Banjul is full of interest. Albert Market dates back to the 19th century and sells everything from souvenirs to fresh fruit: there are also lots of stalls offering food and drinks, from which to watch the hustle and bustle. For a complete contrast, a visit to Arch 22 is recommended.

At the top of Independence Drive, which is home to many government buildings, the Arch stands some 35m high and commemorates The Gambia’s independence from the UK in 1965. Elsewhere, a journey out on the creeks of the River Gambia is a relaxing way to spend an hour or so.

Step back in time as your tour takes you through five centuries of history, focusing on the slave trade and Gambian Kunta Kinteh, who was forced into slavery in the 18th century.

Boarding your boat, you will pass Dog Island en route to Albreda, which was a French trading post during the slavery era. Here you will view the freedom flag pole, the national monument, and visit the Slave Museum.  Continue to Jurrureh village, which was the home of Kunta Kinteh before he was forced into slavery and taken to the Americas in the mid 1700s. Kunta Kinteh was whom author Alex Haley based the history of his bestseller Roots upon.

Your final visit is to Kunta Kinteh (previously James Island), which played a vital role during the slave trade. This tiny island, which used to be six times larger, was used to keep slaves for around two weeks before they were shipped to Goree Island. The most characteristic item remaining on the island is the dungeon. Out of 14 built, only one remains – the others were washed out by erosion or the gunpowder explosion that occurred in the 18th century.
