Arrecife, Lanzarote

Old Castle in Arrecife, Lanzarote

Introduction to Arrecife, Lanzarote

Arrecife is the gateway to the island of Lanzarote.

Arrecife is a bustling port, with the biggest fishing fleet in the Canaries. Back in the 16th and 17th centuries the city was regularly attacked by pirates: to defend against these raiders, the court of Spain built two splendid castles overlooking the harbour. Castillo San Gabriel is the older of the two, built in 1590. It now houses the island’s Ethnographic Museum, which tells the fascinating story of the original inhabitants of the island, the Gaunche.

The Castillo San Jose was built to provide employment and alleviate poverty on the island following volcanic eruptions in the 1730s: as a result it became known as the Fortress of Hunger. Today it is home to the Museum of International and Contemporary Art, with a small but impressive collection of modern paintings and sculpture. Appropriately, given the name, it also has an excellent restaurant in the basement where diners enjoy panoramic views over the harbour area.

Enjoy the experience of seeing the real Lanzarote as you travel off the beaten track into areas that cars cannot reach.

Travelling in your 4x4 you will head towards Tahiche for your first stop at Nazareth village, where Omar Sharif's House 'Lagomar' is located. Admire the exterior of the house, which is located in the side of a cliff and was built by the famous artist César Manrique.

Travelling on towards Teguise, you will negotiate high ground with commanding views that give the city a tactical and defensive advantage over coastal towns like Arrecife, hence why Teguise has secured its status as Lanzarote's capital for 450 years, until 1852. Teguise is perfect for sightseeing, with its town being declared a site of historic and architectural importance by the Spanish government back in the 1980s.

After a short walking tour, you will leave Teguise and continue off road and along dirt tracks, crossing the centre of the island and passing Famara Beach. You will then head towards Timanfaya National Park, which stretches from the edge of Timanfaya right down to La Geria, and is home to some fascinating scenery. Here you will enjoy a stop to capture photographs of Tinguaton Volcano before travelling on to La Geria vineyards and the Visitor Centre where you will have an opportunity to sample one of the locally produced wines.

The garden is a stone-built enclosure and provides a stunning background for these unusual plants. The interior structure is circular with walls made up of terraces descending from the ground, in levels displaying the different varieties of cactus. It is also in this area that the cochineal beetle has been cultivated. The beetle lives on cacti and its larvae are used to produce the valuable red colourant, cochineal, formerly found in drinks such as Campari. The Life of Manrique (Tour N)

  • Visit Cesar Manrique’s house just the way it was left the day he passed
  • Appreciate the history that floods his museum
  • Admire Manrique’s artistic flair as you explore his foundation

Price£80.00 - £100.00
DurationApproximately 4 hours
Walking level 2 - moderate walkingModerate walking

Take a very intimate look at Lanzarote’s most famous resident - César Manrique.

Passing by the village of Mala and Guatiza you will get on the northeast coast to the Cactus Garden where the local artist César Manrique converted a natural gravel mine into the beautiful garden with more than approximately 1000 species of cacti from all over the world.

At the surroundings of the garden you can also see the local cultivations of cactus with cochineal parasite used as a natural component for colouring and as ingredient for some other drinks and products.

Continuing to the north, next stop will be in Haría at Manrique´s house, the last house where the artist was living, that has opened to the public only recently. In a stroll through César Manrique’s House and Museum the visitor catches a glimpse of the rooms where the painter lived and worked in his last years. Located in a striking palm forest, his last home is wrapped in an intimate, cosy atmosphere. Two courtyards serve as an entrance to a surprising world of personal belongings, utensils, craft tools and a miscellaneous of minor treasures for which Manrique invented for an aesthetic purpose. The home, set in a space characterised by elegant materials and good taste, is a reflection of all the finest features of a traditional island dwelling. The luxuriant outdoor and indoor plant life contributes to a calm and relaxing ambience.

In the workshop set off from the house, you can discover the original scenario where Manrique worked, surrounded by pigment, drawings, easels and unfinished paintings, all conserved just as he left them the day he died.

This tour is a unique opportunity to obtain a close-up view of Lanzarote’s great artist in a truly singular world sited in the midst of the peaceful natural beauty of Haría Valley.

From here, after a short drive, you will get to Tahiche village where you will visit the César Manrique Foundation whose main aim was to preserve the environment and combine the beauties of the island with natural protection and decoration.

César Manrique Foundation is the best example of his ideas; it has been built on five huge natural volcanic bubbles and it consists of two levels. The upper floor is inspired by the traditional architecture of Lanzarote and the underground level takes advantage of the five natural volcanic bubbles adapted for habitation and linked by small corridors. His foundation contains some of his own work and a private collection of contemporary art of artists such as Picasso, Tapies and Miro. The Foundation is also a centre of art and culture popularisation and, in an adjacent building there are organized exhibitions and art conferences during the year.
