Antsiranana (formerly Diego Suarez) is the largest city in Northern Madagascar, located close to one of the world's largest and most beautiful natural bays.

Picturesque Antsiranana (formerly Diego Suarez) is Northern Madagascar’s largest and arguably most interesting city. Smothered with French colonial charm, the streets are lined with charming traditional architecture and are home to large markets selling an abundance of fine local produce and hand-made crafts. Away from the bustle of the markets you can while away the hours devouring delightful local delicacies in the fine restaurants or head the island’s breathtaking north coast, where you’ll find stunning views of Sugarloaf Mountain and one of the world’s largest and most beautiful natural bays.  

Head south from the city and deep into the untouched landscapes of Madagascar and you’ll be rewarded with some of island’s most memorable sights and experiences. Two large National Parks await your exploration and are home to an array of wonderful fauna and flora. Keep your eyes on the skies to hopefully spot the Madagascar Fish Eagle – one of the world’s rarest birds of prey – and discover beautiful waterfalls and crater lakes at Amber Mountain National Park. At Ankarana Special Reserve, visit the sacred lake see 150-million-year-old Jurassic limestone formations and spot an array of flora and fauna including various lemur species and a variety of birds.

The Amber Mountain National Park is a place of tropical beauty and home to a variety of flora and fauna just waiting to be discovered.

After boarding your transport, head towards Amber Mountain, passing mango trees, flame trees and tropical vegetation. Located in the Diana Region of northern Madagascar, the Amber Mountain National Park is known for its waterfalls and crater lakes and is home to 75 species of birds, 25 species of mammals and 59 species of reptiles. The park offers a tropical humid climate and features an abundance of flora and fauna that are typical of humid forests in Madagascar.

After a short walk, you will enter the National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for animal species that might well surprise you, including the crowned lemur. As you walk through the park, watch your step as hidden among the flora you may find the Brookesia chameleon, a species of chameleon that is so small it can fit in a thimble! Keep your eyes peeled for the brown lemur, the smallest primate in the world as it jumps from branch to branch above your head. The park is also of major botanical interest and includes lichens, orchids, palms and ficus.

After approximately two hours of exploring this stunning location, head back to your awaiting ship, making a short stop at Joofre place to gain views of the bay and take some photographs.

Named for its crystal clear turquoise waters, the Emerald Sea is a large coral lagoon which borders the northern entrance of the pass to the bay of Diego Suarez. With magnificent landscapes, the richness of its seabed and its exceptional colours in the water, it really is a tropical paradise and a location not to be missed!

Departing from the port you will head towards Ramena Bay where you will board your boat and sail to the Emerald Sea, the most visited destination for relaxation and discovery in Northern Madagascar.

Once at the Emerald Sea, a site of almost supernatural beauty, you will have approximately one hour of free time to relax, snorkel and swim in the bay. Thanks to the clarity of the water and its shallow depth it is not uncommon so see manta ray and sea turtles roaming freely in their natural environment. Refreshing tropical fruits will be served here for you to enjoy.

All too soon it will be time to head back to Ramena Bay and then back to your awaiting ship. En route you will make a short photo stop at the Pain de Sucre.

There is a limited amount of walking involved in this tour, however the boat must be boarded by climbing over the edge and will involve a wet landing; therefore guests must be agile enough to make the large step. Please come wearing shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. The clarity of the water and the marine life seen on this tour cannot be guaranteed. If you wish to snorkel during your free time, you will need to provide your own snorkel gear. Sun shades and toilets are not available to use on the beach.

With beautiful turquoise water and lined with long white beaches, the three bays of Diego Suarez really are a sight not to be missed. There’s no better way to spend your day than by admiring the natural beauty of the area.

Depart from the pier you will drive through the town and administration quarter. Leaving the town behind you, drive eastwards passed the Commonwealth Cemetery where a stop will be made to take photos of Sugar Loaf en route.

Continuing on you will head towards Ramena village, where a short stop might be possible (time dependant) before reaching Orengea and Cap Minet.

The first bay that you will stop at will be the Bay of Dunes. An approximate stop of 45 minutes will allow you to enjoy the white sandy beach or may be take a dip in the crystal clear waters (tide permitting).

Next stop is Bay of Pigeon, a small but perfect bay before heading to Sakalava Bay which is recognised as one of the most beautiful windsurfing spots in the world. A light lunch will be served before time at leisure will allow you to relax on the white sandy beach and depending on the weather you might even catch the odd wind surfer or kit surfer.

On the return journey you will make a short stop at Joffre Place where you will be able to view the Boudicca and take that all important photograph.

Located on the flanks of Montagne d’Ambre, in Joffreville, Le Domaine de Fontenay is a perfect base for discovering the primary forest, home to numerous lemurs and where you can also see a large variety of orchids, most of which are endemic to the Diego Suarez region – this tour is a must for lovers of flora and fauna!

Departing from the quay, take the drive through the town centre and residential area of Diego Suarez. A short stop at the daily market will allow you to observe the locals going about their daily business.

Leaving the town behind you, drive toward the Arasara Airport on the National Road that is boarded with flame trees, mangos trees and on the left you will have a view of the French Mountain which is a protected area consisting mainly of dry deciduous forest. Continuing on and heading southward you will drive through the tropical vegetation to Joffre Ville, an old colonial town. Driving through here will take you to Domaine de Fontenay.

Once in Domaine, soft drinks and a visit to the tortoises will be made. The Domaine de Fontenay is a private park located at the foot of the Montagne d’Ambre National Park and is set in a gorgeous century-old garden, permeated with the scent of jasmine and frangipani and home to numerous varieties of palms, orchids and countless tropical plants. An approximate one hour walk through the forest will allow you to view the bay and numerous waterfalls. Host to seven species of lemurs, 12 species of micro-mammals, many varieties of birds and batrachians, you really do have to keep your eyes peeled and cameras at the ready.

Back at the garden of Domaine de Fontenay, the beautiful old country house and former stables that were transformed into a small, but luxurious hotel is where lunch will be served. A small amount of time at leisure after lunch will allow you to explore the pathways, tropical plants and sweet smelling shrubs.

All too soon it will be time to leave the stunning surroundings and return to your awaiting ship. En-route a short stop will be made to a souvenir shop for you to pick up that all important memory of your day.

Discover a sight worth seeing in a sandstone formation made of small sandstone needles which are formed and changed during land and mud slides after heavy rain. The landscape is constantly changing with old needles eroding and new ones appearing from beneath.

Departing the quayside in your 4x4 vehicles you will head through the town, residential area and administrative quarter, passing the market en-route. Leaving the town behind you keep your eyes peeled for flame trees, mango trees and the protected area, teaming with endemic flora and fauna, of the French Mountain.

Driving southward you will arrive at the Red Tsingy where a 30 minute walking descent will take you to the Red Tsingy. Laid out before you will be an ancient rock formation that is unique to Madagascar, a picture here is a must! Sand formations that, many years ago was overlaid by red clay,is now eroding and exposing the tall white, with tinges of red, olumes of sand formations underneath. Approximately one hour here will allow for you to enjoy the unusual but stunning scenery, complimented with a refreshment.

On the return journey you will drive eastwards for a panoramic view of sugar loaf before arriving back at the port.
