Almeria, Spain

Introduction to Almeria

Experience Almeria, a city with a great deal of charm and one steeped in history.

A city steeped in history, Almeria is one of the most interesting destinations to visit in Andalusia. Once one of the Islamic Cordoba Caliphate’s major ports, the cityscape is dominated by the ancient Arab fortress of Alcazaba – from where wonderful views of the beautiful port and city centre are found – and the 16th century, renaissance style fortified Cathedral.

Within the city centre there is plenty to enjoy, including several museums that contain historic artefacts from Prehistoric, Iberic, Roman and Greek times. There are also a number of bars and restaurants serving tapas and local meats, fish and delicious seafood. Away from the centre you will find gorgeous beaches with dark sands and rocky coves, the perfect place to lie back, relax and soak up Almeria’s warm, soothing climate.

In the 1960s the deserts surrounding the city were used to film westerns, notably those by the Italian director Sergio Leone. These days the Tabernas Natural Area and its old film sets, complete with saloons and ranches, are a tourist attraction.

Almeria is a pleasant and largely modern city which offers a relaxing holiday destination and a wealth of history to discover.

Travel past modern apartment blocks towards the centre of the town whose core still consists of the distinct Mudéjar-style, where flat-roofed houses line the narrow, winding alleys. Embark on a walking tour of the Old Town, with an inside visit to the fortress-style Cathedral, built in the 16th and 17th centuries as a form of defence against the raids of the Barbary pirates. Its façade has four buttressed towers made from large blocks of stone, and the apse is in the shape of a polygonal tower. During your visit you can admire the main altar, the 18th century cloister and a number of valuable paintings and sculptures by important artists from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Next, visit the immense Arab fortress, which was built by the Caliph of Cordoba, Abd-er Rahman III, and dominates the town. Dating from the 10th century, the Alcazaba is divided into three sections. Its thick walls with large towers spread away from the citadel across the Valley of La Haya as far as San Cristobal Hill. Attractive gardens have been laid out inside, and from the top there are splendid views of Almeria and the coastline. Leaving the Arab fortress, you will then walk down to the square below to rejoin your coach for the short drive back to the pier.
