Alesund, Norway

Balmoral in Alesund, Norway

Introduction to Alesund

Ålesund is an astonishing visual experience, an art-nouveau epic of towers and turrets, ornaments and balconies, steeples and spires. Stroll through the pedestrianised streets, enjoying the art galleries, diverse shops and lively cafés, or climb 418 steps to the top of Mount Aksla to enjoy panoramic views of this attractive city.

Almost completely destroyed by fire in January 1904, Ålesund was rebuilt within three years and is regarded today as one of Europe’s true marvels. With its beautiful art-nouveau towers, turrets, ornaments, balconies, steeples and spires, Ålesund is an amazing visual experience and one of Norway’s most popular attractions.

Ålesund’s pedestrianised streets beg to be explored, with their incredible architecture and excellent array of art galleries, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars to discover and enjoy. Central Ålesund is also home to the Jugendstilsenteret – The National Art Nouveau Centre. The centre has the town’s best preserved art nouveau interior and features many exhibitions and displays. It is well worth visiting to explore Ålesund’s extensive art nouveau history.

There's plenty of fantastic natural sights to be discovered here too and from Ålesund’s mountain and Aksla viewpoint you'll enjoy panoramic views of the archipelago, the town centre and the Sunnmore Alps. The mountain can be climbed on foot via steps or you can always take a taxi and at the top you will find the Fjellstua restaurant and café - the perfect place to sit down, relax with a cup of coffee and soak up the views.

Learn about the local marine life with this visit to one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Northern Europe.

From your ship, you will drive approximately three kilometres to the Ålesund Aquarium. Tanks are built to resemble coastal environments. The largest tank contains 4,000,000 litres of unfiltrated, fresh seawater and you can view the marine life through an acrylic panel that is 26.5 centimetres thick and 17 metres (55 feet) long. The highlight of a visit to the aquarium is feeding time – you will see a diver in the tank feeding the many different types of fish.

There is also an outdoor pool with penguins, which should feel at home at this time of year. The aquarium has a lovely setting and you can look straight out towards Breisundet - the wide sound surrounded by islands - and far out to the open ocean. Seal Bay, the largest seal pool in Europe is a popular attraction with this wonderful view as a backdrop. Here you will find harbour seals in their natural environment and an underwater observatory gives you and the seals the perfect way to observe each other. This is a most innovative way to show life along the Norwegian coast. New for 2017 – and a natural extension of Seal Bay – is Otter Island. This is the new home for three otter cubs, who have not only got their own island, but their own lighthouse too!

Spend the morning exploring the Sunnmøre Alps on snow shoes!

Snowshoes were first used by hunters and trappers in Central Asia more than 6000 years ago, and their use quickly spread to many other parts of the world as people migrated and settled in new areas. They became a necessity for areas that typically have a lot of snow in the winter months, and many consider their invention to be one of the most important human inventions – on par with the wheel.

Travel by coach and ferry to Stranda Mountain, where you will embark on a guided snowshoe tour for approximately one hour. Your guide will tell you about the local culture and heritage, as you walk with views over the Geiranger UNESCO World Heritage site.

The facilities at Stranda are excellent and you may wish to stop for a break and enjoy a drink or snack at one of the two mountain restaurants.

You will start your tour by coach and pass through the town of Ålesund and travel along the Storfjord and then Romsdalsfjord to the small town of Åndalsnes, at the beginning of the Romsdalen Valley. Along the valley floor, in a wild and beautiful setting, runs the salmon river, Rauma, which you will travel alongside. You will stop for a photograph of the magnificent Troll Mountains.

The Troll Mountains are so called because of their shapes and are very dramatic. At 1,000 metres, Trollveggen is Europe's tallest vertical, overhanging rock face. Scandinavian rock climbing started in the Romsdal Alps, which boast some of the world's most difficult climbs. On the opposite side of the valley, the Romsdalshorn peak towers to a height of 1,555 metres.

Arriving at Bjorli, a popular winter resort, you will have lunch before boarding the Rauma Railway. The railway line opened in 1924, after more than 40 years of planning and it took ten years to build. It is a feat of engineering, with winding tunnels of up to 180 degrees. Cross 32 bridges, including the impressive Kylling Bridge which spans the River Rauma. You will be taken back, through the Romsdalen Valley, to Åndalsnes – this time seeing it from a different angle.

Rejoining your coach you will drive along the Romsdalsfjord and the Storfjord back to Ålesund.

Join a high speed Zodiac (inflatable boat) safari which is sure to set your pulse racing. Admire the town of Ålesund and the surrounding Sunnmøre Alps from the sea and visit a seal colony and the well-known bird sanctuary at Runde, home to puffins and sea eagles.

During your journey, keep your eyes peeled for groups of puffins and plenty of kittiwakes. The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourful bills, nest in holes in the rock. During the nesting period, from the beginning of April to mid-August, the whole area teems with life, in the air and on land. If you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of a sea eagle hovering overhead, hunting for prey. Guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas and gannets are also part of the flourishing bird life at Runde, which you will view from the sea.

The seal colony usually contains around 60 seals, which are often spotted onshore as well as in the water. They are very friendly and may come towards the boat to say hello. As well as telling you about the seals and birdlife, your guide will regale you with stories of sailing ships, shipwrecks and sunken treasures.
