Old Town, Aarhus, Denmark

Introduction to Aarhus, Denmark

Aarhus boasts a beautiful hilly landscape interspersed with forests and meadows to explore, but it also offers pretty sandy beaches to enjoy too, as well as fine architecture.

Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city is packed with interesting and exciting places for visitors to explore. An elegant mix of quaint, historic charm and modern, cosmopolitan culture, there is plenty to see, do and experience in Aarhus.

Known as the ‘city of cafes’, there are many places to enjoy a delicious coffee among the narrow streets of the town and there are also many bars, restaurants and shops to discover too. In the town centre you will also find the unique and controversial Åarhus Radhus (town hall), where the best views of the city can be had from the 60 metre clock tower. The Forhistorisk Museum Moesgard is also worth a visit, with its unique collection of prehistoric artefacts, including the town’s most famous inhabitant – 2,000-year-old Graubelle Man, found preserved in a nearby bog in 1952.

Den Gamle By (The Old Town) is a wonderful open-air museum with about 80 buildings from all over Denmark, dating from the 17th- and 18th-centuries, while a trip to the Arhus Kunstmuseum is also recommended.

Stroll through the cobblestone streets lined with traditional half-timbered houses and hanging colourful flower boxes and relax in the quaint old square where you can admire the former Town Hall. Built in the 18th century, the town hall is now home to a museum chronicling the history of the village and the Djusland Peninsula.

Continuing on with your guide, wonder down to the old port area to view the historic steam frigate “Jylland” (external visit). The restored warship is the last reaming steam-driven, propeller-powered frigate in the world. Restored in 1993, the Jylland played a major role in Denmark’s war in 1864 against Austria and Prussia.
