Introduction to Aalborg, Denmark

Known by many as the ‘Paris of the North’, Aalborg is a charming city combining beautiful historic architecture with the comforts of modern-day culture.

Known by many as the ‘Paris of the North’, Aalborg is a charming city combining beautiful historic architecture with the comforts of modern-day culture. In the city centre you will find well preserved medieval landmarks such as the 14th century cathedral and Aalborghus Castle – ‘the castle that doesn’t look like a castle’ alongside bars, cafes, galleries and modern museums.

The city has a vibrant, friendly atmosphere and is a pleasure to explore, especially at night when the city really comes to life. Jomfu Ane Gade, possibly Denmark’s most famous street is said to have the longest continuous stretch of restaurants, bars and cafes in Denmark and festivals and events often take place here. Away from the city, you may want to visit the nearby Bisnap, Møllestenen and Hou South beaches for a little rest and relaxation.

FYRKAT VIKING FORTRESS

  • Enjoy a fascinating glimpse into the world of Vikings
  • Explore the Fyrkat Fortress, one of the oldest ring fortresses in Denmark
Activity Tour
Price£40.00 - £50.00
DurationApproximately 4 Hours
LimitationLimited Capacity
Walking level 3 - extensive walkingExtensive walking

Discover the fortress which sits on a well-chosen inlet, strategically near the ancient trading routes between the northern and central part of Jutland. Learn about those times and discover what remains of the Viking legacy.

First you will discover the ring fortress - designed as a circle with four gates opposite each other and connected by two wooden roads that cross at a right angle in the middle of the fort. A circular road gave access to the wall. In each of the quarters stood four longhouses of identical design, arranged in a square with a smaller house in the middle. Although the fortress seems primarily designed for military purposes, remains of more peaceful activities were found during the archaeological excavations, implying this was more of a village in which warriors, craftsmen, women and children lived and worked within the earthworks.

Close to the Fyrkat Fortress you will find a recreated Viking farmstead, intended to showcase the everyday life of Viking farmers of that period. It is a reconstruction of a farm found near Jelling. During the warmer months the farmstead is populated with local volunteer enthusiasts who wear Viking dress and perform various household chores, and cultural traditions, for visitors to observe.
