Many of Iceland’s most amazing wonders await your discovery on this sensational circumnavigation of the island aboard Balmoral, which includes magical scenic cruising; calls into a string of spectacular destinations; and host of astonishing sights and experiences.

The time you spend in this incredible country will be simply unforgettable from beginning to end. First you sail by the active Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, which famously erupted in 2010; Elliðaey Island, home of the ‘world’s most isolated house’; and the unusual Elephant Rock en route to Reykjavik. Stopping overnight in the world’s northernmost capital is sure to be rewarding, with chances to tour to the wonders of the Golden Circle – the Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Hot Springs and Thingvellir National Park – or the geothermal Blue Lagoon Spa. Or perhaps you’d prefer to take in the city’s highlights, including Hallgrímskirkja Church and the National Gallery before sailing to Ísafjörður. From here you can journey to the unspoilt Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and marvel at the craggy, mountainous habitat of thousands of sea birds. Your day in Ísafjörður is followed by another evening of memorable scenic cruising, sailing by the Hornstrandir cliffs and tooth-like peaks of Drangaskörð.

The next morning Balmoral will arrive in Akureyri for an overnight stay, affording time to take in the galleries, museums and trendy cafés of Iceland’s stylish second city; or discover a wealth of wonders nearby. Perhaps opt to tour to the Godafoss ‘Waterfall of the Gods’ and beautiful Lake Mývatn, or join a once-in-a-lifetime whale watching trip. After departing from Akureyri in the early afternoon, you’ll spend the rest of the day admiring the beauty of Eyjafjörður, the pretty islands of Hrísey and Grímsey and Skjálfandi Bay – a whale hotspot – from the comfort of the ship. The town of Seyðisfjörður is your final port of call, arriving here after cruising the Borgarfjörður Eystri and Seyðisfjörður. Savour the magnificent scenery and admire the colourful houses here; or perhaps tour to the enchanting Skálanes Nature and Heritage Centre. Your Icelandic adventure will come to the perfect end, with scenic cruising by the soaring mountains and rugged cliffs of a string of breathtaking waterways.

Seyðisfjörður is regarded as one of Iceland’s most picturesque towns. Its remoteness and hard-to-reach location makes a visit here even more special: one of the advantages of cruising the Icelandic coast. The valley above the town echoes to the sound of the 25 thundering waterfalls formed by the river Fjaroara as it cascades down to a lagoon at the head of the fjord.

On Our Ship

Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.
