Northern Lights in the sky over Tromso, Norway
Northern Lights in the sky over Tromso, Norway
Cruising to Norway in the winter – when the spectacular landscapes are at their most dramatic and the cold, unpolluted air is at its crispest – is always a special experience, and on this fantastic fortnight aboard Balmoral you’ll see this breathtaking country at its frozen finest.

Take in the interesting attractions of Trondheim, such as the brightly-painted houses of Bakklandet and the Gothic-style Nidaros Cathedral; marvel at the unique Torghatten ‘Mountain with the Hole’ and the soaring peaks of the Seven Sisters Mountains; and cross the Arctic Circle before calling into Tromsø, the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’. Perhaps spend the day savouring the neoclassical architecture, enjoying the views from the top of Mount Storsteinen, and admiring the beautiful, iceberg-shaped cathedral; then leave the bright lights of the city behind at nightfall to go in search of the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis – a simply unmissable and unforgettable experience.

In Alta – considered one of the best places on earth to see the Northern Lights – you might be lucky enough to see Mother Nature’s incredible light display once again during an overnight stay. There’s also time to stop by the unique Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel; or visit the fascinating Alta Museum and learn about the region's famous rock carvings and paintings, some of which date back to between 4200-3300BC. Don’t miss the chance to explore the surrounding Arctic landscapes on an exhilarating dog-sledding adventure. Encounter wolves, lynx, arctic foxes, reindeer and other incredible native fauna on a tour to the Polar Park from Narvik, which sits among the pretty islands and peaks of the Ofotfjord; and step aboard the Rauma Railway in Åndalsnes to see plummeting waterfalls and Trollveggen – Europe’s tallest vertical rock face – up-close. There’s also the chance to ride the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen and explore the UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf in beautiful Bergen.

On Our Ship

Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.
