A call into Bremen – where your ship will have special permission to dock – kicks-off your journey of German discovery in style. Docking close to the centre of the city – rather than an hour away in Bremerhaven – means you don’t have to waste time on coach trips that guests on larger cruise ships would. Instead you can make the most of your extended stay to explore to at your leisure, taking in highlights such as the UNESCO-listed Market Square, the 15th century Town Hall and the contrasting sights of the medieval Schnoor and modern Überseestadt districts. After departing Bremen via the Weser River you’ll enjoy the first of two journeys through the Kiel Canal en route to Kiel. Here you can delve into the extensive seafaring history of the city at the interesting Maritime Museum and Laboe Naval Memorial; indulge in a little retail therapy at Holstenstraße, one of Germany’s longest shopping streets; or perhaps opt to escape to the beautiful Holstein Lakes on a memorable tour.
Then it’s on to the delightful resort town of Warnemünde, where you can make the most of the seasonal warmth on the inviting white sand beaches. Alternatively you could tour to one of Germany’s most enchanting historic cities, Rostock. After a boat trip along the River Warnow from Warnemünde you can take in Rostock's beautiful City Hall and St Mary’s Church, pick up souvenirs at the market, and even visit a local microbrewery to sample a selection of traditional German brews. Yet more daytime scenic cruising follows, navigating the narrow Kiel Canal once more and sailing the winding River Elbe towards Hamburg. Here you'll have time to discover landmarks such as the towering neo-Renaissance style Rathaus and St Michael’s Church; wander the pretty squares; and sample the vibrant atmosphere of the bustling HafenCity district. There’s a chance to see the striking cityscape from a different perspective during a boat ride on the Alster Lake too.

On Our Ship
Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.
