Arctic Russia & Northern Norway
Braemar • M1815 • Prices from £1,999.00 (cruise only)
After beginning this enlightening cruise with two days at sea, you’ll call first into Ålesund and Trondheim. Ålesund’s pretty pedestrianised streets are lined with fine art-nouveau architecture and well worth exploring; while the views from atop Mount Aksla are not to be missed. In Trondheim, be sure to see the Gothic-style Nidaros Cathedral and admire the Bakklandet district’s colourful painted houses. The following day you’ll marvel at the Torghatten ‘Mountain with the Hole’ and the soaring Seven Sisters Mountains, before Braemar crosses the Arctic Circle en route to Tromso. Here you can visit the iconic, iceberg-shaped Arctic Cathedral and ride a cable car to the top of mighty Mount Storsteinen. Then, after spending a day in Honningsvåg – gateway to the North Cape – and experiencing the mesmerising Midnight Sun, you’ll head to Kirkenes – a maiden call for Fred. Olsen. This small Norwegian town situated close to the border of Russia offers an abundance of experiences, including opportunities to go fishing for giant King Crabs or visit the border itself.
From Kirkenes it’s on to Murmansk, the largest city within the Arctic Circle. Situated on the Kola Peninsula, this remote destination combines stunning arctic beauty with fascinating Russian history, and Soviet-style architecture. Take in sights such as the Alyosha Monument, which symbolises the defence of the Arctic by the Soviet Union during World War II; and be sure to visit the Lenin Icebreaker. Once the world’s first nuclear-powered surface vessel, the Icebreaker is now a museum and one of the city’s top attractions. Returning to Norway, your next stop is Harstad, where the many historic and military secrets of Hinnøya Island are yours to uncover. Don’t miss the 12th century Trondenes Church and fascinating Trondenes Historical Centre. Kristiansund is the final port of call, arriving here after scenic cruising along the mountain-lined Trollfjord and beautiful Norwegian coast. Take the chance to explore the history of Klipfish at the one-of-a-kind museum; or perhaps enjoy an unforgettable end to your time in Norway with an incredible journey along the Atlantic Road – you’ll soon realise why it’s one of the world’s most photographed highways.
