El Hierro Overview
El Hierro is not a name known to many, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, a place to get close to nature and impressive scuba diving opportunities, it is the perfect cruise holiday destination.
The smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro is well and truly off the beaten tourist track.
Its stark volcanic landscape and craggy coastline is lapped by transparent waters, making El Hierro a scuba diver’s paradise. To the northwest are the fertile areas of the El Golfo valley with its vineyards and plantations and in the centre, dense pinewoods. And, if you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the island’s famous giant lizard.
Considering its location, seafood is top of the menu along with rabbit and goat and, of course, the famous quesadillas sweet pastry, delicious washed down with the local wine.
Declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a cruise to El Hierro is perfect if you want to avoid the crowds and traffic and just enjoy the simple pleasures of nature’s beauty.
