Although a country with an enviably high standard of living, Brunei is surprisingly laid-back and not at all ostentatious, unlike Dubai. A very traditional country, it’s important to dress modestly and to follow its customs.
Your Brunei cruise holiday will take you to one of the smallest countries on earth, yet this tiny sultanate is blessed with some of the largest oil fields in southeast Asia. Situated on the northern coast of Borneo, Brunei boasts pristine rainforests and the world’s oldest reigning monarchy and centuries of royal heritage.
The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is adorned with gilded domes and towering minarets. But it’s not a show-off; there is no nouveau-riche ostentation. Instead polite, unassuming people who simply enjoy the finer things in life will welcome you.
Away from the city you’ll find an untouched rainforest and Ulu Temburong National Park. So if you were thinking that Brunei would just be Dubai in miniature, think again.
And as for the food, you’re in for a tasty treat. Very similar to Malay cuisine, Bruneian food is quite spicy and includes satay, broiled fish, BBQ chicken and various rice dishes. Check out the city’s Pasar Malam Gadong and Taman Selera markets for a traditional taste of Brunei.
