He started his career at sea in 1984 serving on various ships, such as chemical tankers and cargo ships.  His first cruise ship was in 1986 where he started as an Ordinary Seaman.  In 1990 he started at nautical college and he gained his Captain's license in 1993.  Captain Dyrnes joined Fred Olsen Cruise Lines in 2005 on board Boudicca as Captain, later transferring to Black Watch; before he was appointed as Master of the Balmoral and has been on board since the inaugural cruise.  At home he likes to spend time with his family, and he enjoys hiking in the mountains as well as spending time on board his own boat, a cutter of 58 feet which was built in 1911.
