Since its birth in 1632, Portland has triumphed over three great fires (started by Indians, the British and by accident in turn) to become the attractive community of today - seen at its best on a stroll through the revitalised Old Port Exchange District near the waterfront, whose historic buildings now house smart shops and restaurants - order the succulent clams or lobster.
