Our tour takes us around some of Scotland’s most rugged and unspoilt landscape and includes visits to one of the most spectacular gorges and waterfalls in the country as well as to one of the most impressive and enchanting gardens in Europe.
Leaving the pretty town of Ullapool, we travel south east along the banks of Loch Broom to Dundonnell before swinging round the tip of the peninsula, with its views across to Cailleach Head - site of the lighthouse that guides ships into Loch Broom and Ullapool, and into the wide strath of Little Loch Broom. We travel to the viewpoint above Durnamuck and can enjoy the views, subject to weather conditions, across the loch to Beinn Goblach. Moving onwards, we cross over Gruinard Island and pass the picturesque Gruinard Bay.
We shall arrive at Poolewe, a little village on the sheltered south side of Loch Ewe and the setting for the well known Inverewe Gardens. This mecca for garden lovers is a haven for plants, thanks to the special temperate climate supplied by the Gulf Stream. The climate can accommodate a vast array of flora from all over the world. The verdant oasis of foliage and colourful flower collections form a vivid contrast to the wild, heathery crags of the adjoining coast. The gardens were the brainchild of Osgood Mackenzie, who inherited the surrounding 12,000 acre estate from his grandfather. Palm trees and other subtropical plants flourish in the mild climate. We will have free time here to wander and enjoy the gardens at our leisure.
After the garden visit we return to Ullapool and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or wheelchair users – due to the walking, over some steep and uneven paths. Please take care as there are also tree roots across some paths. We will spend approximately one hour at the garden. There will be toilet facilities at the Garden. There is a gift shop and restaurant. Please be aware that flowers may not be in bloom during our visit.
