    TOUR A - DUBLIN HIGHLIGHTS

    Excursions

    • £40 - £50
    • 4 hours
    • Medium

Departing from the pier, we begin our tour by passing The Custom House, located on the north bank of the River Liffey. It was designed by James Gandon and completed in 1791. Crossing the River Liffey to Dublin’s south side, we will pass The Old Parliament House, now the Bank of Ireland, and Trinity College. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, it is Ireland’s oldest college. Located in its library is the Book of Kells - a hand illuminated manuscript of the Gospels. Originally a single volume, it was rebound in four volumes in 1953 for conservation reasons. Two volumes are usually on display - one opened at a major decorated page, the other at a text opening. We will stop here to view this world-renowned treasure, which lies deep within the walls of this historic building.

Our city tour continues, passing the Georgian squares of Merrion and Fitzwilliam, the National Gallery of Ireland, Government Buildings and St Stephen’s Green. Driving along Dawson Street, we can view The Mansion House, the residence of Dublin’s Lord Mayor. Next we pass Dublin Castle, City Hall and Christchurch Cathedral en route to visit St Patrick’s Cathedral. Founded in 1190, St Patrick’s is perhaps best known for its association with Jonathan Swift, who was Dean here from 1713 to 1745, and the pulpit from which he preached can still be seen.

On the north side of Dublin’s River Liffey, we will pass the Four Courts, Ireland’s Courts of Justice. The north side boasts the wide boulevard of O’Connell Street, and here we will pass the General Post Office, scene of the 1916 rising and birthplace of the Irish nation.

TOUR NOTES: This tour is predominantly a sightseeing coach tour with stops at both Trinity College and St Patrick’s Cathedral. Walking of over 1,000 metres is required, and over 50 steps are encountered – therefore this tour is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Traffic permitting, we should spend approximately 45 minutes at each stop, and our visits will be guided. Please note that the Book of Kells is a very popular exhibit so the College will probably be very busy and there may be a wait to view it. There are toilet facilities and a small shop available at Trinity College. The order of sights visited may vary.
