TOUR G - HIKING IN THE WICKLOW MOUNTAINS
Excursions
- £80 - £90
- 8.5 hours
- Limited to 30
- Strenuous
Our day will commence with an approximate 90-minute drive to Glendalough in County Wicklow. It is the site of a 6th century monastic settlement and has ruined churches which are scattered around two lakes. It also boasts some of the best scenery on the East Coast of Ireland.
On arrival in Glendalough we will commence a walk, of approximately four hours, through the valley. We will follow the Spink Loop Walk. Ascending 380 metres and covering ten Kilometres, this moderate walk has a good mix of hills, paths and a boardwalk. We shall follow the Miners Road to the Miners Village, before crossing Glenealo River. From here our hike up the mountain will take us to an area affectionately named Van Diemen’s Land. A refreshment stop and time to enjoy the spectacular scenery is allowed before commencing the return walk. On the way back we will pass Pollanass Waterfall and the Lower Lake before arriving back in the valley.
Back at the Glendalough Hotel a light snack will be served before it is time to rejoin our coach for the drive to Dublin Port and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This is a walking tour, therefore it is only suitable for passengers who are fit and energetic – we shall be walking for approximately four hours. Rough, rocky, sloping and hilly ground will be encountered. Suitable footwear with a good grip should be worn. Dress in layers that you can add or remove as necessary. A light lunch box will be provided by the ship, which we will each be expected to carry - you may wish to bring a bottle of water. At Glendalough Hotel our snack would usually include soup and sandwiches and a drink.
