The Cape Verde Islands emerged from a colonial culture - aspects of this culture are clearly seen on this tour, from its mixed population, buildings, monuments and traditions. Our drive will give us the opportunity to feel in touch with the nature of the island and the style of its population, across the street markets of the city, and the lunar view of the landscape between the city and Catfish Bay Beach.
Catfish Bay Beach is a weekend village where the white sand meets clean, blue water. We shall sightsee from the most interesting panoramic points of the Island - including views from The Pik D´Zau over the Town and the port, and the Cruz Joao Evora. Places and monuments we shall visit include The Mindelo Cultural Centre, where we will see an art exhibition; a brief stop at Praia de Cachorros (Dogs Beach); the monument of Diogo Afonso, the Portuguese Navigator who discovered the islands in 1460 and the colonial Discovery Cross Mark.
We will stop for souvenir shopping at Amilcar Cabral Plaza – where the handicrafts and art of the islands can be seen. A short guided walk will also take us to the Mindelo Municipal Vegetable Market, and the City Hall Church Plaza.
Our tour will include tasting Portuguese wine and local delicacies, whilst listening to the sound of local traditional folk music by violin and acoustic guitars at Catfish Bay Beach. We will also see the impressive colourful costumes of the Mindelo Carnival Kings and Queens Show.
TOUR NOTES: This tour will give us a good overview of the town and the island. There is some walking involved - at viewpoints (optional), the refreshment stop and during the walking tour in the town. There will be soft drinks available at the tasting. Tours here are provided for guests wishing to learn more about the island from our knowledgeable guide, however guests may explore the town on their own quite economically. Please note that should our call fall on a Sunday, Mindelo Municipal Vegetable Market will be closed, therefore we shall take a short panoramic drive of part of the island, which offers excellent panoramic views.
