Get in touch with the town where the Tango was born. During this tour we will visit Avenida de Mayo that runs into the Plaza De Mayo, which is surrounded by the Casa Rosada (Government House), the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo which is the first City Hall, built during the Spanish rule. At the other end of Avenida de Mayo we will find the stately Congress building.
We continue on to the charming old city quarter of San Telmo, the best kept historical neighbourhood and eldest district of Buenos Aires where both the high and humble society once lived and was later repopulated by shiploads of European immigrants who moved into the abandoned mansions. These mansions were subdivided into one or two bedroom dwellings ‘conventillos’ which still exist in San Telmo Today. Here we will have time to stroll around Plaza Dorrego, where we can find many antique shops.
Back on our coach, we will drive along 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest in the world, where we will see the Colon Theatre and famous Opera House that stages the most important artists and musicians from all over the world.
Next we visit the beautiful Palermo – a neighbourhood of parks, gardens, mansions and embassies before visiting the Recoleta area, one of the city’s glamorous spots. Here we will find the Municipal Cultural Centre, elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants, surrounded by centennial trees. At the cemetery of Recoleta we will find the grave of Eva Duarte who became famous as Eva Peron (Evita). The cemetery is the centre of this aristocratic neighbourhood, as the more relevant personalities of Argentina’s history rest here. The mausoleums and pantheons reflect the architectural diversity emerging from the different cultural tendencies Argentina incorporated in its formation as a nation. The cemetery is considered to be one of the most impressive monuments of Argentina.
TOUR NOTES: There is only a little walking involved in this tour, therefore it is considered suitable for guests with limited mobility – as long as they have someone who can assist them and can board our coach unaided. There are a few steps at the Cathedral. Please note that we will be transferred from our ship by shuttle bus to the cruise terminal building, through which there is an approximate 100-metre (300 feet) walk. The order of the visits may vary from the above depending on local traffic conditions.
