Discover the small coastal town of Corinto.
Named after the Greek city of Corinth, Corinto is a small port close to the fascinating city of Léon. Centred round the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and full of stunning colonial buildings, Léon was the capital of Nicaragua for over two centuries. The original city was established in 1523 at the foot of the Momotombo volcano. When the volcano erupted in 1610, the city was damaged beyond repair and abandoned – Léon was rebuilt in its present location. The ruins of old Léon – Léon Viejo –still exist. Among the buildings that can be identified are the plaza, main street, the cathedral, a fort and a few private homes.

During our visit we will be able to discover over 1,000 plant species and 80 different types of birds in the 12 hectares of this enchanting botanical garden. As we walk along the two and a half miles of trail, we will see the different groups of plants, trees and vegetation from the Tropical Dry Forest

Departing the pier by coach, our guide will introduce us to the rich and cultural traditions of Nicaragua. We shall firstly arrive at El Viejo Town which means ‘The Old One’. This rustic town is known for its wide variety of traditional foods as well as the colonial church, Menor Basilica, which was constructed in the first quarter of the 17th century.

Leon, the former capital for 200 years, with its 300,000 residents is, after Managua, the most important city in Nicaragua. It was established on its present site following an earthquake, which destroyed the old Town of Leon in 1609.

Following a journey of approximately one hour and 15 minutes we will arrive in the colonial city of Leon. The city was founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors at the base of the Momotombo Volcano, however in 1610 following constant earthquakes and volcanic activity the townspeople decided to move Leon to its current location.

Corinto is a small coastal town, located on the north-west coast of Nicaragua. Even though Corinto only has a population of approximately 20 000,the town itself is home to one of the biggest harbour ports.
The town’s name originates from Corinth, a city in Greece, and what Corinto lacks in riches it makes up for in nostalgia and tranquillity. Life passes slowly in this town, an ideal past time is exploring the streets of Corinto which are lined with quaint little shops and lovely church buildings.
