TOUR B - BRIKSDAL GLACIER
Excursions
- 60 - 70
- 4 hours
- Hard
Our excursion starts from the charming village of Olden, where we pass the church dating back to 1759 and, further up the valley, a red painted church from the early 1900’s – a gift from an American who settled in the village. He was a collector of Norwegian antiques and his home is today a museum.
We continue along the beautiful, narrow Olden Lake to Rustøen, situated at the far end of the fjord. Here small, colourful farms cover the wide, fertile valley and numerous waterfalls descend from the ice field. In front of us we will see the Melkevoll Glacier.
At Briksdal Inn, having passed through woodland en route, we will start our walk to the wonderful viewpoint, which should take approximately 45 minutes to one hour. The track crosses the river and ascends above a waterfall to the top, where we will have a fantastic view of the Briksdal Glacier – an arm of the mighty Jostedal Glacier. The first part is rather steep but becomes flatter until a small leg at the end, which is more difficult.
Reaching the Briksdal Glacier, we will observe the spectacular range of blues and turquoises that the ice reflects – well worth the walk! Sometimes the glacier ‘calves’, making a sound like thunder. For our own safety, we should respect the warning signs on display.
Walking back to the Briksdal Inn via the same route, refreshments will be served before we drive back to Olden.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves two 45 to 60 minute hikes over some steep and rocky terrain; appropriate footwear is essential (sunglasses are also recommended). While a limited number of electric cars, each taking up to seven people, may be available for independent hire to take you part way to the glacier, we cannot guarantee their availability. If the transport is required, please enquire at the Tours Desk onboard before booking the tour. At time of printing, the cost of the optional transport was 180 NOK (approximately £18). It should be noted that we will not walk on the glacier.
