TOUR G - AMSTERDAM CITY & VAN GOGH MUSEUM
Excursions
- £45 - £55
- Approximately 4 hours
- PLEASE REFER TO TOUR NOTES
Although we appreciate that many passengers will choose to explore the city alone, this tour is for those of us who enjoy seeing the sights from the comfort of a coach, and who value the services of a fully qualified English speaking guide to enlighten us. During this tour we will also visit the famous Van Gogh Museum.
Our city tour commences with a drive through the historic centre of Amsterdam, past Dam Square, with the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk, and the Mint Tower, to the museum area.
Upon arrival at the Museum, we will see the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent Van Gogh. The collection originally belonged to Vincent’s younger brother, Theo Van Gogh. Following Theo’s death it passed to his widow and although a number of works were sold, she retained a major group representing all phases of Van Gogh’s work. Following her death in 1925, her son, Vincent Willem Van Gogh, inherited the collection and in 1962, on the initiative of the Dutch State, he transferred the works to the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation. They are now on permanent loan to the Van Gogh Museum and form the nucleus of its collection.
At the museum, our guide will brief us before we enter. A personal headset will then guide us through the museum giving us an explanation of each painting. The museum also has works by other 19th century artists – contemporaries and friends of Van Gogh’s, among them Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – as well as a number of older artists he admired, such as Lèon Lhermitte and Jean-François Millet.
Following our visit, our city tour will continue. Some of the sights we will see include the Rijksmuseum, the Concert Building and the entertainment area Leidseplein before returning to our ship.
TOUR NOTES: There is approximately one and a half hours of walking at the Van Gogh Museum, and approximately ten steps to negotiate. There is also a walk of approximately 200 metres from the ship to the tour coach, and vice versa. Toilet facilities are available at the Museum.
