We will pass rich agricultural countryside before arriving at Ullandhaug, with its reconstructed Iron Age farmhouses. In one of the low houses with a turf roof we shall learn about the living conditions from the year 500 AD. A local guide will demonstrate how they made flour, wove their clothes, and tell us about their daily lives. Near Ullandhaug we can enjoy a magnificent view (weather permitting) over Hafrsfjord, where the Viking King Harald Harfagre (Fairhair) defeated the last of the regional princes and united the 29 small kingdoms under one crown, in 872. Thus, the kingdom of Norway was founded. To the east the fertile farmland of Jæren with the Ryfylke Mountains forms the background.
Continuing, we pass by Hinnavågen where the Condeep oil rigs have been constructed. Passing through old and new sections of Stavanger, we shall arrive at the Cathedral. It was built in 1125 by Bishop Reinald of Winchester with the help of British craftsmen. St Swithin is the patron saint of the Cathedral. Of all the Norwegian churches built during the Middle Ages, Stavanger Cathedral is the only one which has retained its original features. In front of the cathedral lies the colourful market square – a favourite meeting place for locals.
On the way back to our ship we will have the option to walk through Old Stavanger, with its narrow lanes and picturesque wooden houses. The 18th and 19th century houses were built mainly for seafarers, craftsmen and businessmen. This particular area is today considered to be unique, and the city’s most important preservation project.
TOUR NOTES: Approximately one and a half hours of walking are involved at Ullandhaug and the Cathedral and approximately 200 metres from the ship to the tour coach. The ground may be snowy, uneven and uphill and there are steps at the viewpoint and Cathedral. The approximate 20 minute walk through Old Stavanger back to our ship (which includes cobblestones and a steep lane or steps) is optional, and guests can return by coach to the pier. We will have a guided visit at the Farm and free time at the Cathedral. The Cathedral can be closed at short notice due to religious functions, in which case it will be viewed from the outside only. Places of interest may be visited in a different order to that described.
