Murmansk

Known as Romanov-on-Murman when it was founded in 1916 as the largest Russian seaport on the Arctic Ocean, Murmansk lies on the forest-clad Kola Peninsula.

The main attractions are Alyosha, the statue of a concrete solider looking out over the bay; and the St. Nicolas Church. The Murmansk Regional Museum on Prospect Lenina is also well worth a visit.
