The Lofoten Islands appear to be a wall of mountains, dramatically rising from the ocean. Yet within the valleys, and even the fishing ports, there is lush, green vegetation. Fishing and agriculture are the main industries. There are approximately 30,000 sheep in the Lofoten Islands, 50 percent on Vestvågøy (the lamb from here is well known for its tenderness and taste), and many types of vegetables and berries are cultivated in the rich soil, aided by the warm Gulf Stream. On the island of Vestvågøy, we travel by coach through Leknes – the municipality’s centre of administration and trade, yet with less than 2,000 residents. We then proceed to the small, traditional village of Ballstad for a short photo stop. Interestingly, Ballstad has probably the world’s largest outdoor painting on the walls of its shipyard. Continuing to Einangen, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Buksnesfjord – where our ship lies at anchor – before returning to the pier.

This tour involves minimal walking, therefore it is suitable for passengers with limited mobility.
