Harstad, referred to as the ‘Cultural Town in the North’, is situated on Norway’s largest island, Hinnøya. We will enjoy some sightseeing around the centre, and a stop at the viewpoint above the town, before we visit Trondenes Church. Built in 1250 – one of the best legacies of this period in the country, and one of the world’s most northernmost Middle Age stone churches – it stands proud in its picturesque surroundings by the coast. The church contains some art treasures and beautiful furniture and fixtures. We now visit the Adolf Gun from World War II, the largest land-based gun in the world. The barrel is big enough for a man to crawl through. The batteries at Trondenes were built in 1943 by the German occupiers. The bunkers have exhibits depicting the history of the mammoth gun, which can only be visited with an authorised guide, as it stands on military property. Our next stop is at the Trondenes Historical Centre, in a beautiful setting. North Norway’s exciting history is presented through displays and a multimedia presentation: we may wander through the Viking Age, the Middle Ages, and World War II. We then return to our awaiting ship.
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking; some steps may be encountered.
