Denmark is the "Land of the Vikings" and this tour will take us to Roskilde – former capital of Denmark and home of the spectacular Viking Ship Museum.
Denmark is the "Land of the Vikings" and this tour will take us to Roskilde – former capital of Denmark and home of the spectacular Viking Ship Museum. After a drive of approximately one hour we arrive at the museum which is on the banks of the Roskilde Fjord. On display are five Viking longboats that were sunk over 1000 years ago – one of the most important discoveries from that era and all found in the nearby Roskilde Fjord. A short film will be shown about the work undertaken to restore the longboats. After approximately two hours at the museum we will make a ten minute drive to our second stop – the Roskilde Cathedral – where we will have a short time to look around. Located on the ridge at the very heart of Roskilde fjord it cuts a prominent figure in the town and local landscape. In 1995 the Cathedral was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List. It is one of the earliest examples of French inspired, Gothic brick architecture and the whole site constitutes a beautiful, harmonic unit. The Cathedral has never hosted royal weddings but holds 39 royal tombs of Danish Kings and Queens. We return to our ship through the lush Danish countryside.
Walking at the museum and the cathedral is considered moderate, however passengers should be aware that a certain pace is required to keep with the group. Please note that should a religious service be taking place – the Cathedral can not be visited. A soft drink will be provided during the coach journey.
