Passing the city park and lake, our tour continues south through Bergen’s attractive suburbs. On Nordås Lake we can see the royal residence, ‘Gamlehaugen’.
Leaving the pier we pass Bergenhus Fortress which contains the coronation hall from 1261 when Bergen was the capital of Norway, the gabled fronts along the wharf (Bryggen) – remnants of the time when the Hanseatic League was at the height of its power – and the fish market. Passing the city park and lake, our tour continues south through Bergen’s attractive suburbs. On Nordås Lake we can see the royal residence, ‘Gamlehaugen’. Fana Mountain offers us a superb view, though only 230 metres (755 feet) above sea level. Descending we reach the Lysefjord where, on the 175 acre Lysøen Island (the ‘Island of Light’), the violin virtuoso Ole Bull lived. We will visit his home which was built in 1873 and is a blend of architectural styles. The beautiful estate is reached by boat and the crossing will take approximately ten minutes. Our tour of the house will include an introduction to the composer’s life and time to admire the wooden interior décor. Bull died in 1880 and the estate was later donated to the Norwegian Society for Historical Preservation by his granddaughter. Our route back to Bergen takes us through woodland, past lakes and through the village of Nesttun.
We do not recommend this tour for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users, as it requires a moderate amount of walking, five steps to embark/disembark the boat, a narrow stairway and 12 steps into Bull’s house, and a couple of steps at the church. Refreshments are included.
