Birdwatching By Boat at Runde
Northern Europe Excursions
ALESUND, NORWAY
Our local guide will take us very close, in good weather as close as just a few metres from the rock. We should see large groups of puffins and plenty of kittiwakes. The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourful bill, nest in holes in the rock.
Runde is Norway’s southernmost and largest bird rock. The island itself has 150 human inhabitants who are joined by some 500,000 birds in the mating season. While about 80 species nest here, around 230 different species have been registered as visiting. There is a hectic bird life all year round – even during midwinter, an exciting colony stays in spite of the rough climate. Boat trips are the best way to experience the joys of Runde. From Ålesund, it is an approximate 45-60 minute journey. Our local guide will take us very close, in good weather as close as just a few metres from the rock. We should see large groups of puffins and plenty of kittiwakes. The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourful bill, nest in holes in the rock. During the nesting period, from the beginning of April to mid August, the whole area teems with life, in the air and on land. If we are lucky we might glimpse a sea eagle hovering overhead, hunting for prey. Common guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas, Brunnich’s guillemots and big gannets are also part of the flourishing bird life at Runde. Landing on the island is not allowed, but in good weather conditions the boat will go right into the caves – some 160 metres (525 feet) long. We return to Ålesund. Please note that this tour is subject to cancellation due to bad weather. A degree of mobility is required to board the boat. It is not suitable for wheelchairs. It can be chilly at sea, so be sure to wear warm clothing – layers that you can remove if necessary are best. Binoculars are essential!
