Rouen is a city which has stirred the souls of many great writers and inspired numerous painters. It is situated on the north bank of the River Seine and is considered as the historical capital of Normandy. A guided walking tour of the old part of the city will take us along the narrow streets lined with more than 700 timber-framed houses, all characteristic examples of medieval building techniques. Our walk will take us along Rue Saint Romain, one of the most fascinating streets, with the beautiful St Maclou Church of flamboyant Gothic style. We will also have an opportunity for an inside visit of the 13th-century Notre Dame Cathedral of Rouen. It is considered as one of the finest achievements of the French Gothic art. The attraction of Rouen Cathedral lies in its infinite variety, including an immense façade with open-work pinnacles and framed by two different towers – Tour St-Romain and the Tour De Beurre. Before returning to our ship we will stop for some free time at the Place Du Vieux Marche – the old market square where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake following her trial in 1431.
Places of interest may be visited in a different order to that described. There is approximately 1 ½ hours of walking involved, mainly over cobblestone streets.
