Porto Empedocle is the port of Agrigento, a Greek colony since the birth in 581B.C. It was destroyed by the Carthaginians and rebuilt in the 3rd century B.C by the Romans. Departing from the ship we will take an approximate 30 minute drive to reach the wonderful Valley of the Temples where we will begin a walking tour ravished by the archaeological beauties that are preserved in the celebrated valley. The world famous Valley of the Temples is Sicily’s most outstanding Greek heritage site. A sacred area of Greek origin where many temples are still standing in their magnificent, all built with the local yellow orange rock of shell sediments. Surrounded in greenery of olive and almond trees we will be able to admire the Temple of Olympic Jove, one of the biggest temples in antiquity, the Dioscuri Temple, the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Concord, the Temple of Juno and the tomb of Hero. With a magnificent day behind us we will return to our coach for the short trip back to our awaiting ship. This tour does involve approximately 2½ hours of continuos walking around the Valley which will include some very hilly, uneven ground and 20 steps. Therefore this tour is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair uses.
