An ancient and rich town of the Oscan period, Pompeii is a well-preserved example of a Roman city during the time of the great empire. A flourishing civilisation buried for 1,700 years has been brought to life again. 20,000 people lived in this town until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, when 20 feet of ash and pumice covered Pompeii. As our guide will explain, much of this has been removed during the last 200 years to reveal all aspects of daily life. The tour of the excavations begins from Porta Marina, the gate to the forum that was the centre of economic and political life. We proceed through the remains of some ancient shops and home and other sites of archaeological interest. Please note that this tour involves a moderate mount of walking of approximately 2¼ hours inside the excavations, and includes some steps. There will be a steep incline at the ruin’s entrance. Due to the nature of this tour, it is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users.
