    Once the equal and arch-rival of Venice, Genoa has a medieval old town to rival any in Europe. On the Piazzo San Matteo are the houses of the Doria family while on the harbour front is the 14th century Palazzo San Giorgio. In the old quarter of Genoa is the Romanesque Gothic Church of San Donato.
