For those who wish to spend one day in Rome, this tour gives the opportunity to see and explore what are considered to be the major sights in this wonderful city. Departing from the quayside by coach, we go by the motorway directly to the centre of Rome. One of the highlights during this tour is, no doubt, the Vatican City. A sovereign state within the Italian Republic, it has been independent since 1929. The enormous Piazza San Pietro took Bernini ten years to build and it is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful squares. In it stands San Pietro in Vaticano, better known as St Peter’s – the largest church in the world. We will follow the classical itinerary through the main historical sites: the Roman Forum, the centre of the city’s political and religious life; the Arch of Constantine, one of the largest triumphal arches; and one of the most important monuments of ancient Rome, a symbol of the eternity of Roman Civilisation – the Colosseum. In it over 80,000 spectators could watch the gladiator contest and the slaying of wild beasts which took place here, for over 300 years. A walking tour will take us to the well-known Fontana di Trevi, the Piazza Colonna, and the Pantheon - the best preserves Roman monument. During the day, a typical Italian lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
Passengers are advised to wear comfortable shoes, as there is a considerable amount of walking involved; rough ground and several steps can be expected. Religious practice requires the shoulders and legs to be covered in St Peter’s. Although head covering is no longer compulsory, shorts, low neck line or bare shoulder dresses are not allowed inside the church. The itinerary may be adjusted according to traffic regulations and Papal Audiences. Please note that the visit to the Colosseum will be external only and no stop will be made here, as traffic regulations do not allow vehicles to stop. When visiting the Basilica with the guide, it is compulsory for the use of the whispers (headsets); no large bags are allowed to enter the Basilica; there maybe queues to enter as every visitor must pass through metal detector controls. The cost of the tour does NOT include the Vatican Gallery.
