Mount Etna is Europe’s largest active volcano, standing at approximately 3,326 metres (10,910 feet) high, with its flanks covered with scores of cones and craters. Etna covers an area of 1,190 kilometres² (460 square miles) with a basal circumference of 140 kilometres. This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being nearly three times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. We will board our coach, depart from the pier and proceed through the centre of town until we reach the highway to Mount Etna. Along the scenic road that winds around the slopes of the mountain, passing the town of Giarre and the village of Zafferana, we will arrive at Mount Etna-Crateri Silvestri, at about 1,950 metres (6,400 feet) above sea level. From this point on, there are endless small volcanic cones, awe-inspiring rows of hardened lava, tiny villages, orchards, vineyards and tall pine groves, all surviving from the lush soil on which they sit. From this view point we will enjoy a panoramic view over the Gulf of Catania.

Please be advised that walking around the craters will be over rocky ground. Due to the altitude it may be cool and we would suggest taking a jacket. This tour is dependent upon good weather conditions.
