The picturesque little town of Taormina enjoys a magnificent position on a terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea, on the east coast of Sicily. Though it has become one of the most popular Mediterranean sunspots, it has managed to retain its medieval character. We leave our ship and take the highway to Taormina. Upon arrival we will begin a walking tour through the Messina Gate, which was restored in the 19th century. The Corvaja Palace (outside view) is the next highlight; its name derives from the Corvaja family, one of the most ancient and noble families of Taormina, who owned it from 1538 to 1945. It rises in Abbey Square and is the most important medieval palace of the town, with Arabic style yet at the same time Gothic and Norman influences. Then it’s on to the Greek theatre, built in the 5th century and later expanded by the Romans, who enlarged the stage and added a partial roof (now destroyed). The view of Mount Etna and the sea beyond is breathtaking. Free time will be available in the town before we depart back to our ship.
Taormina is not accessible to traffic, therefore the tour is conducted on foot. There are approximately 30 steps inside the theatre. Not recommended for passengers with limited mobility. Please be aware, due to our call into Catania being on a Sunday there will only be a limited number of shops open during our free time.
