Departing from Bari, we will proceed through the beautiful green Apulian countryside, dotted with vineyards, almond and olive trees and scattered with ‘trulli’ – unique white stone houses, bee-hive shaped with grey stone roofs. Alberobello is famous for its trulli and has been declared an International Human resource by UNESCO. Upon arrival (the drive here takes approximately 75 minutes) we will visit the historical centre of the village, with around one hundred of these fascinating buildings constructed during the 6th and 7th centuries. Having admired the strange shapes surrounding us, we will also visit the early 20th century Church of Saint Antonio, built mixing Romanesque-Apulian style with the architecture of the trulli. We may sample some regional produce of taralli (a type of bread stick), olives and wine before enjoying a little free time to stroll in the alleyways of this tiny village – maybe we’ll watch local artisans at work producing textiles and ceramics – prior to returning to our ship.
This is a walking tour, sometimes over uneven and hilly ground. The church visit is subject to services not taking place. We cannot guarantee the activity of the artisans. Please note that if our call is on a Sunday, many of the shops may be closed.
