Ancona was founded by refugees from Syracuse about 390 B.C. and in the reigns of Caesar and Trajan it was fortified and developed into a naval base. The main monuments to see include S. Ciriaco Cathedral, the Arch of Trajan and the S. Maria Della Piazza.
