Volos, Greece

-
Large and bustling city of Volos.
This part of Greece has Neolithic settlements from 6,000 years ago. Volos was little more than a hamlet in the Middle Ages, when it became part of the Ottoman empire. Part of Greece since 1881, it grew rapidly into an important port: the waterfront is now lined with pastry shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. The Volos Archaeological Museum has many finds dating back to the pre-Hellenic period, including pottery, sculptures and a unique collection of stelai – painted or moulded icons placed on graves. There are some interesting churches, including a number with wall paintings by the local artist Theophilos.
