PIRAEUS, GREECE

Arriving at the Acropolis, there is a breathtaking view of antiquity as we look upwards towards the marvellous structure of the Parthenon, the temple of the Greek goddess Athena.

Departing the port of Piraeus, we travel past the charming yacht harbour of Zea with visible foundations from the 5th century dock. Next we pass the attractive Mikrolimanon’s waterfront, lined with inviting al fresco fish restaurants. From here it is a short drive into cosmopolitan Athens. Here great monuments still stand in the midst of modern structures. From the ancient city there is the Temple of Zeus and the Panathenaic Stadium (a brief photo stop will be made here), while the neo-classical city includes the House of Parliament, Constitution Square, the monument of the Unknown Soldier, the National Academy, Library and the University.

Arriving at the Acropolis, there is a breathtaking view of antiquity as we look upwards towards the marvellous structure of the Parthenon, the temple of the Greek goddess Athena. Together with our guide, we can climb up the pathway and steps leading through the massive Propylaia, onto the rock of the Acropolis itself. We can relive the glory that was Greece as we view the Parthenon, the Temple of the Wingless Victory and the Erectheion. The whole city of Athens will be at our feet. From here, we re-board our tour coach for the return journey to Piraeus.

TOUR NOTES: This is a strenuous tour, which involves approximately two hours of walking during our visit to the Acropolis, which will be over uneven and hilly terrain and can be steep and slippery at times. There are around 140 steps to negotiate in total, therefore this tour is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There is an uphill walk from the coach park to the entrance of the Acropolis, with some steps to negotiate. Please note that depending on our berth, there is an approximate 200-metre walk from the ship to our tour coaches, and vice versa. Flat, comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended. Passengers are advised to wear sun protection and to bring a bottle of water. Large bags are not permitted at the site. Passengers may stay near the bottom of the hill during our visit if they wish. Please allow for extra time on this tour, as the traffic in Athens can be heavy. Please note that the Acropolis is a popular tourist attraction, therefore crowds are likely. The amount of walking during the period of free time is at the discretion of the individual. Souvenirs and refreshments can be purchased close to the coach park – these will be at the passengers’ own expense.
