Your first view of Khania may prompt you to rub your eyes and check the itinerary as this picturesque port on the island of Crete looks more Italian than Greek.

With its colourful houses and disctinctive blue and white churches, the harbourfront is a throwback to Khania's days as a medieval Venetian enclave. Look closer though, and there are also reminders of the island's Turkish and Minoan history. Inveterate walkers will also see the potential in the port's setting in the foothills of the White Mountains.
