HERAKLION, GREECE

Crete is an island of contrasts; cosmopolitan and perhaps overdeveloped in some areas, but rough and unspoiled in others. Visitors to this island, Greece’s biggest, may find jagged mountains, harsh and barren lands, lush wooded hills, fertile plateaus and broad sandy beaches.

Departing from the city of Heraklion, we head south-east for approximately 45 minutes, until we reach the hillside village of Thrapsano. This village is renowned throughout Crete as the centre for traditional pottery workshops, and still produces the time-honoured ‘pitharia’ (storage jars), which have changed little since Minoan times, 5, 000 years ago. We will watch the potters at work and admire their wares. Examples of their beautiful craft may be purchased. Our tour continues to the village of Peza, centre of one of the most important wine-growing areas of Crete. Here we will see local vineyards and visit a Peza winery before sampling some of the produce. We will also learn from a video about the production of Cretan olive oil and olive oil soap. Following our visits to these two lovely villages, and having become acquainted with their fascinating ancient crafts, we return to Heraklion and our awaiting ship. This tour involves some walking over cobblestones. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
