GIBRALTAR

The rock of Gibraltar, overlooking the entrance to the Mediterranean and nearly 425 metres (1,400 feet) above sea level, is reputed to be one of the legendary Pillars of Hercules. With its policemen, pillar-boxes and pubs, the Rock is still staunchly British. From the quay we drive towards the airfield’s runway, to reach the British/Spanish frontier. Continuing we reach our first stop as Europa point – the southernmost part of Gibraltar, where the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Great Britain can be seen. From this vantage point the African continent is often visible. We proceed to the Upper Rock area and to St Michael’s Cave, where we can appreciate a mass of strangely shaped stalagmites and stalactites. We may meet perhaps Gibraltar’s most famous inhabitants – the apes! Via the Upper Rock we exit the nature reserve, passing by the Moorish castle and the tower of Homage that still bears the scars of battle. Finally we will enter the town area, where we will drive down the narrow winding road to exit at the main street and return to our ship. This tour is suitable for passengers with limited mobility, as there is minimal walking involved. At St Michael’s cave there are 75 steps to exit, but passengers can return via the entry point to avoid the stairs.
