Following a short drive of approximately 30 minutes we reach ‘A Cupulatta’, the only Tortoise Protection Centre in Europe. There are only three protection centres in the world; the other two are located in Africa and America. In this specialised reserve, approximately 130 different species can be seen and in total there are approximately 3,000 Tortoises ranging from water turtles to earth tortoises, from every continent. The water turtles and earth tortoises have acclimatised completely to Corsican weather and can even hibernate on the spot! The centre also has areas designed specifically for certain species that require warmer weather, as well as a glazed hatchery in order to house the eggs during the incubation period.We will be able to view the eggs and the small baby tortoises measuring only 1 or 2 centimetres, to the largest tortoise, which measures, more than a metre long!If time permits we may also enjoy a short panoramic tour of the city.Please note that the order of sights may vary. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking and standing, mostly over uneven and rough grounds. There will also be steps to negotiate. We would recommend you to wear flat comfortable shoes, and take your sun hat and a bottle of water along with you. Don’t forget your camera! We do not recommend this tour for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users.
