This drive up the gorges of Prunelli will provide an easy but immensely varied tour to explore the area surrounding Ajaccio. We will see the landscape dramatically change from gardens and orchards to huge forests of chestnut and pine trees; we can admire views from the beaches of the wonderful blue water, and ascend high up into the mountains of more than 2,400 metres (7,800 feet) in altitude.Leaving the port in the direction of the village of Cauro, it won’t be long before we are in the famous Corsican countryside, the ‘Macchia’. As the road twists we enter the gorges of the Prunelli River. The deep red granite cliffs plunge down into the second most important river in Ajaccio’s surroundings. At the end of the gorges we will discover the artificial lake and dam of Tolla, which provides a large proportion of the Corsican population with drinkable water and electricity. Our return journey will twist back down the Mercujo Pass towards Ajaccio through the villages of Ocana and Basteliccacia. It is in these villages where most of the fresh products in the local market are grown. Please note that this tour involves a moderate amount of walking over uneven and rough ground, at Tolla Lake and the Prunelli gorges. Please note that there is a slight incline leading to the comfort stop, for passengers not wishing to walk up the incline it is possible to gain entry via a set of steps, with approximately 30 steps in total to negotiate.
